What do you do when the birds you’re trying to study keep disappearing into the illegal pet trade?
You sleep under their nests for weeks on end…
This is what is happening in Belize where groups of conservation-minded Belizeans are bent on protecting Belize’s Scarlet Macaws from poachers.
The Macaw’s range spans from Southern Mexico to Bolivia. On the whole, the Scarlet Macaw’s population is declining but not yet threatened. However due to poaching and deforestation the species now only exist in a few small populations in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
Without dedicated conservation programs in these places, it is highly likely that this subspecies could become extinct.
